Proofpoint settings exploited to send millions of phishing emails daily

By Bill Toulas,  Bleeping Computer A massive phishing campaign dubbed "EchoSpoofing" exploited now-fixed, weak permissions in Proofpoint's email protection service to dispatch millions of spoofed emails impersonating big entities like Disney, Nike, IBM, and Coca-Cola, to target Fortune 100 companies. The campaign started in January 2024, disseminating an average of 3 million spoofed emails daily and reaching a peak of 14 million emails in early June. The phishing emails were designed to steal sensitive personal information and incur unauthorized charges. They also included properly configured Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and Domain Keys Identified Mail (DKIM) signatures, making them appear authentic to the recipients. Guardio Labs helped discover the phishing campaign and security gap in Proofpoint's email relay servers. In May 2024, they notified the firm and helped them fix it.

Fake Google Chrome errors trick you into running malicious PowerShell scripts

By Bill Toulas,  Bleeping Computer A new malware distribution campaign uses fake Google Chrome, Word, and OneDrive errors to trick users into running malicious PowerShell "fixes" that install malware. The new campaign was observed being used by multiple threat actors, including those behind ClearFake, a new attack cluster called ClickFix, and the TA571 threat actor, known for operating as a spam distributor that sends large volumes of email, leading to malware and ransomware infections. Previous ClearFake attacks utilize website overlays that prompt visitors to install a fake browser update that installs malware. Threat actors also utilize JavaScript in HTML attachments and compromised websites in the new attacks. However, now the overlays display fake Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and OneDrive errors. These errors prompt the visitor to click a button to copy a PowerShell "fix" into the clipboard and then paste and run it in a Run: dialog or PowerShell prompt. ...

US journalists targeted by foreign hackers who show sophisticated understanding of American politics

By Sean Lyngaas, CNN In the days before the January 6, 2021, insurrection, Chinese hackers sent out a flurry of malicious emails to prominent White House correspondents and other journalists at major US news outlets in an apparent intelligence collection effort, US cybersecurity firm Proofpoint said Thursday. As Chinese hackers scrambled to ascertain whether there would be a peaceful transfer of power in the US, they tried to break into the email accounts of high-profile US journalists, who can be softer targets for hackers than officials on US government networks. The newly revealed hacking campaign shows just how valuable a target journalists can be to intelligence services in search of clues about US policy. To try to lure them, the attackers wrote email subject lines about then-President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election, pandemic relief legislation and other enticing issues. Proofpoint Discovers Potentially Dangerous Microsoft Office 365 Functionality that can Ransom Files Stored on SharePoint and OneDrive

Ransomware attacks have traditionally targeted data across endpoints or network drives. Until now, IT and security teams felt that cloud drives would be more resilient to ransomware attacks. After all, the now-familiar “AutoSave” feature along with versioning and the good old recycle bin for files should have been sufficient as backups. However, that may not be the case for much longer.  Proofpoint has discovered a potentially dangerous piece of functionality in Office 365 or Microsoft 365 that allows ransomware to encrypt files stored on SharePoint and OneDrive in a way that makes them unrecoverable without dedicated backups or a decryption key from the attacker.   Our research focused on two of the most popular enterprise cloud apps - SharePoint Online and OneDrive within the Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites and shows that ransomware actors can now target organizations’ data in the cloud and launch attacks on cloud infrastructure.    Read on!

Conti’s Ransomware Toll on the Healthcare Industry

But new information confirms this pledge was always a lie, and that Conti has launched more than 200 attacks against hospitals and other healthcare facilities since first surfacing in 2018 under its earlier name, “ Ryuk .” On April 13, Microsoft said it executed a legal sneak attack against Zloader , a remote access trojan and malware platform that multiple ransomware groups have used to deploy their malware inside victim networks. More specifically, Microsoft obtained a court order that allowed it to seize 65 domain names that were used to maintain the Zloader botnet. Microsoft’s civil lawsuit against Zloader names seven “John Does,” essentially seeking information to identify cybercriminals who used Zloader to conduct ransomware attacks.
